Plastic , a fairly new material , is
incredibly useful . from medical instruments and computers to lightweight , ''
unbreakable '' containers and insulation , plastic seems to be used in just
about everything we use and has clearly made all of our lives easier . so
what's the problem? It's not easy to recycle it effectively and takes a
very long time to break down naturally .
because of this , it builds up and causes terrible pollution . nowhere is this
more obvious than in our oceans , where bits of plastic have gathered to form
massive garbage patches , which put fish , birds , and marine mammals at great
risk . this book explains the kind of pollution plastic is causing and explores
ways it might be reduced in the future .
